The paint has transformed my entire living space. No more synthetic paints. Now my garden and house breathe life. The paint is heavy, so for my small arms I took a smaller brush.

The result is magnificent, and suddenly I don't feel like I'm still living in plastic. The colors vibrate differently. I can feel the wood underneath, no longer imprisoned.

We Offer a DIY Recipe and Ready-to-Use Products

This traditional red barn and ranch paint now comes in additional shades (yes, natural oxides make it possible). It is natural, economical, eco-friendly, and long-lasting. You may already know that these same oxides were used by Neanderthals to paint caves and by Egyptians to create red hieroglyphs.

It wasn’t until the 18th century that the use of natural pigments for building decoration became widespread. Known in Scandinavia, Germany, and Switzerland, this traditional paint has stood the test of time and even crossed the ocean with settlers in North America.

Using iron oxides and other natural minerals, we recreate and reproduce many traditional regional colors from around the world. While Falun red is the most iconic, this barn paint can be customized into numerous shades, offering versatility for all your projects.

Why Choose This Barn Paint?

This barn paint, also known as wheat paint or mud paint, is an excellent choice for protecting wood, both indoors and outdoors. Free from heavy metals and synthetic VOCs, it is even suitable for interior use, including furniture.

Made from simple ingredients like flour, natural mineral pigments, linseed oil, iron sulfate, manganese sulfate (black), and cellulose, this paint is prized for its exceptional durability and deep matte finish when 100% water-based, or a slightly glossy finish when linseed oil is added 1 to 10%.

Key Benefits of Falun Red Barn Paint

Impressive Durability: Provides up to 15 years of protection for exterior wood.
Natural Resistance: UV-resistant and antifungal, thanks to iron sulfate.
Easy Maintenance: No sanding required before repainting.
Versatility: Suitable for wood, stone, brick, and plaster.
Eco-Friendly: Made exclusively from natural and mineral ingredients.

Our Ready-to-Use Barn Paint Products

Our online store offers this classic barn paint in Falun red and a lighter red, along with other shades in powder or paste form for quick and easy preparation. Our ready-to-use mixes contain natural mineral oxides, starch, and cellulose.

Each ingredient is pre-cooked individually, ensuring easier application, stronger adhesion, and more stable colors. Simply add water or linseed oil based on your needs.

  • Linseed oil adds shine and enhances fungal resistance.

  • Without linseed oil, you get a matte finish, but still benefit from the antifungal properties of the oxides.

DIY Recipe for Falun Red Barn Paint

If you enjoy DIY projects, here’s a simple recipe to make your own barn paint. (Note: Homemade cooking results in a decent outcome but may not achieve the same quality as industrial production.)

Ingredients for 10 Liters (Covers 30m² – Approx. a garden shed)

  • 700 g of flour (wheat or rye)

  • 8 liters of water

  • 2 kg of UV-resistant natural pigments

  • 200 g of iron sulfate

  • 1 liter of linseed oil (8% for warm climates, 10% for cold climates)

  • 10 cl of liquid black soap

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Flour Paste

  • Mix 700 g of flour with 1 liter of cold water.

  • Add 7 liters of water and bring to a boil, stirring for 15 minutes.

Step 2: Add Pigments and Iron Sulfate

  • Stir in 2 kg of natural pigments.

  • Add 200 g of iron sulfate to fix the color and enhance resistance.

  • Cook for 12 minutes.

Step 3: Incorporate Linseed Oil and Black Soap

  • Add 1 liter of preheated linseed oil for better adhesion and durability.

  • Mix in 10 cl of black soap for emulsion.

  • Cook for another 12 minutes.

Step 4: Cool and Adjust Consistency

  • Let the mixture cool.

  • Add water if the paint is too thick.

Important Notes

  • Preheating linseed oil above 200°C is essential for optimal adhesion, shine, and binding. However, this process should only be done industrially due to the high risk of explosion and combustion.

  • In very hot regions, use no more than 8% linseed oil, as excessive gloss could cause cracking under severe heat after a few years.

  • In temperate and cold climates, up to 10% linseed oil is acceptable.

  • Unlike synthetic paints, this natural paint doesn’t peel; instead, it wears away as fine dust over time without leaving surface residue or ground buildup.

Application Tips for Barn Paint

  • Suitable Surfaces: Raw or sanded wood (pine, spruce, etc.), brick, stone, lime plaster, and even metal.

  • Primer Coat: Dilute the paint with 15-20% water for the first coat. Allow 12-24 hours before applying the second coat.

  • Top Coat: Apply undiluted paint for the best results.

  • Drying Time: 1 hour per coat, with 12-24 hours between coats.
